My First Game Jam

ToadArrow Soft. / Sebastiano Todaro: Baptism by fire? What an experience! Firstly I want to thank Peter for his help and introducing me to the want to participate in game jams!  What a relief to finally submit what we have been collectively working on for the past 10 days. I may have taken this more seriously than it was intended. What I saw in my head barely made it out in the 10 days we worked on this. However it was a fun experience nonetheless.

What went well

  • First game Jam experience
  • Using tools new tools like Unity Gaming Services Leaderboards
  • Using new tools like Unity Version Control (Which I think I will personally move my projects to going forward)
  • Using tilemap from Unity
  • Working in a team discussing ideas and taking action on our various different parts
  • Learning different techniques from others code
  • Managing Family / Work / Free time and Game Jam time went surprisingly smooth

What didn’t go well

  • Scope a little too big lots of ideas not enough time to execute
  • Polish, missing so much polish.
  • Having dreams about trying to finalize the jam on time
  • Putting too much pressure on myself
  • Bugs - probably wasted a day on some stupid bugs that in hindsight shouldn’t have taken so long to debug
  • Creating and getting assets for two types of games (one 3D one 2D jammed into one)
  • House is a mess
  • Idea of the game may not be clear or visible to players
  • very hard to die! Will need to fix this asap. Everytime you need to heal you get less time to achieve that goal
